Mariame Dem
Head of West Africa, WaterAid
Mariame has a long and rich experience in the field of international development. She has worked with a number of national and international NGOs in Senegal and more widely, in West Africa. Her longest association was with Oxfam GB, having worked in various capacities in West Africa for 15 years during which, at different points in time, she managed the Senegal programme, served as a Regional Programme Adviser, managed the Coastal Sahel Programme and was the Senior Programme Manager for Sahel.
During her career, Mariame has undertaken a number of freelance consultancy assignments with organizations such as the Centre for Development and Population Activities, Global Water Initiative, ChristianAid, EU Governance Programme, International Institute for Environment and Development and USAID. Her work experience extends to various West African countries - Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Liberia and includes working on emergency, humanitarian and long term development programmes. Mariame speaks fluent English, French, Fulani and Wolof.
Mariame spoke at the Regional Symposium on Sanitation, hosted in Accra in November 2009. The event was co-organised by Unicef, IRC and WaterAid.
Mariame also sits on the board of Congad (council of NGO's for development) which is based in Dakar.
